A weekend series of costume seminars:
These short concise capsules will explain & discuss some of the many skills the Costume community expressed an interest in.

There is a great mix of creative & technical topics from which to choose.

An Evening With Monique Prudhomme

The illustrious (and fellow Canadian!) Costume Designer, Monique
Prudhomme, will be our guest speaker. Monique has recently won the Costume Designer’s Guild Award for Excellence in Fantasy Film for “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for this project. We are looking forward to hearing about her career, her process and personal stories.

Made to Measure / Measuring the Body

Get the technician’s perspective on building custom-made clothing. Learn which measurements are key to a well-fitting garment and how to correctly take those measurements. Antonio Petosa of Aquarius Menswear will show you why his custom suits and shirts are so impeccably tailored. Loreen Lightfoot, cutter on projects such as Amelia and Grey Gardens, will address the various factors that result in a perfect womenswear garment.

The Art of Networking

Networking is a business skill designed to create, maintain and utilize interpersonal connections. Mastering the art of effective networking takes time, dedication and attention. This seminar will focus on improving your understanding of the networking process as it applies to job search, identifying and overcoming barriers. Carol Simpson, a Certified Executive Coach and lecturer, facilitates a variety of leadership workshops and will be taking us through this course.

 Quick Ageing / Greeking

The topics of ageing and greeking covered in this seminar are just two of the many processes involved in prepping clothing for the camera. Learn techniques for quick ageing and a variety of ways in which logos can be hidden or obscured. This class will be taught by Karen Eppstadt, Breakdown and Dyeing Specialist.

 Working With SPFX

Working alongside your Special Effects Coordinator can be a fun challenge for the Costume Department. There are usually specific requirements regarding fabrics and finishings in order for FX to carry out their task efficiently, whether the script calls for someone to be shot, be engulfed in flames or get thrown into the air. Get an understanding of it all from the perspective of John Laforet, FX Coordinator for Performance Solutions.

 Negotiating Skills

Being an effective negotiator is an essential part of your career skill set. How do you go about assessing your needs and then successfully communicate those needs to someone else? Rosemary Della Serra, Della Serra Agency, represents a roster of award-winning costume designers, wardrobe stylists & other creative talent and she will be giving tips on how you can be your own best representative.

 Horror Techniques

Learn about the different types of blood, application methods, copying established blood spatter for multiples, maintaining continuity on blood throughout a show, removing blood, generating re-sets, dried blood, day vs. night blood colours and establishing level of blood. All of these techniques will be covered by Costume Designer Alex Kavanagh (Land of the Dead, Saw II-VII, Ginger Snaps II-III).

Dealing With Nudity

When nudity is called for in a script, it can be a very sensitive issue for both the talent and Costume Department. Find out the various ways in which our Department can help maintain an actor’s “modesty” during such scenes. Luis Sequeira, Costume Designer (Flash of Genius, Being Erica, The Thing), will discuss tips of the trade on the prep side. Christina Cattle, Set Super- visor (Devil, The Incredible Hulk) will talk about nudity on the set.

 Quick Sketch

Being able to communicate ideas is of utmost importance in this business. Even though your sketching ability may not be at an “illustrator” level, there are formulaic ways to approach figure drawing and garment rendering so that you can convey your concepts to directors, producers and pattern cutters. Please bring a sketchbook and pencil to this workshop conducted by Silvana Sacco whose specialties include character conceptualization, fine arts illustration and technical draughtsmanship.
