One day while pursuing her collection of single buttons, CAFTCAD Member Joanna Syrokomla wondered what to do with all those sparkling beauties. Of what use could they be? She grouped them together by colour and felt they spoke such a history of garment design and a nostalgia left from the fastening of cocktail dresses, brocade coats, military jackets, and other finery. Buttons in a jar were such a beautiful stripe needing to be dusted off and seen. She started sewing them into layers onto bracelets and found quite an audience with many coming back again and again for the latest JO.SY Collection vintage button cuff.

Available usually only by request or at the Bi-Annual CAFTCAD Movie Wardrobe Sales, these button cuffs and now chunky bib button necklaces will be for sale by Member Ian Drummond at the Toronto Vintage Clothing and Textile Show. The Ian Drummond Collection will be selling many incredible vintage and designer garments and accessories from the 1940’s through 1990’s.

Conference Ballroom, CNIB Centre

Join us for a fundraiser luncheon at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at the Artisinale Café and Bistro at 37 Quebec Street, Guelph Ontario. Starting with a wine reception, a luncheon follows of local and seasonal cuisine prepared and served with French flair by Chef Yasser Qahawish. Tickets are $75.00 and a tax receipt will be issued for the balance after cost.
Following lunch is the opening of our exhibition Open Drawers, 2009: Highlights from the Fashion History Museum’s First Year of Acquisitions at the Guelph Civic Museum, 6 Dublin St. South (within walking distance of the restaurant.) The opening will be from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. on August 15 and will remain on display daily from 1 – 5 p.m. until August 30. The display will range from a late 18th century dressing table from the Liberty’s of London family to fashions by Worth, Biba, Westwood and Versace. Jessica Biffi, the young Canadian designer who appeared on Project Runway Canada, will present one of the dresses made from her design for the Winners challenge on the show. Her dress will inaugurate the Fashion History Museum’s collection of contemporary Canadian clothing known as our History in the Making collection. Refreshments will be served and there is no charge for the opening, although donations will be gladly accepted.
If you would like to attend the opening we hope to see you there, and if you would like to attend the luncheon that precedes it, please contact as at either 519.267.2091 or 647.328.0017 or email us – we accept cheques, money orders, and if you are signed up with paypal we can send you an invoice. There are only 18 tickets still available (as of July 29) so order early if you plan on coming, we expect to sell out. |
I was at the AGO several weeks ago and luckily happened upon this exhibit. It is not promoted as a costume exhibit however there are approximately 20 pieces on loan from the V&A and several other sources . These are predominately Schiaparelli and some Jacques Fath. You will see many iconic, highly recognizable pieces of historical fashion along with accessories and perfume bottles all influenced by the Surrealist movement. Both designers were trailblazers in their field and these pieces are all still relevent today. A great chance for a close up look at genius design and craftsmanship."
Loreen Lightfoot
Surreal Things offers a new perspective on the surrealists’ contentious and ambiguous relationship to the commercial fields of design, fashion, advertising, architecture, film and theatre. The exhibition explores how the increasing pressures of burgeoning consumer culture conflicted with surrealism’s first principles. Nonetheless, there was significant creative, cross-fertilization between surrealist artists and designers. The exhibition brings together some of the most extraordinary objects ever created, and will include painting, sculpture, architecture, works on paper, jewellery, ceramics, textiles, furniture, fashion, film and photography.
