A crucial element in creating the precise visual experience
Schedule:
Saturday, September 4th, 10am - 6pm
Cost:
LIFT Members $75, Non-members $95
Enrollment is limited to 14
Costumes in films are vital tools to help create a mood, construct a character's identity, enhance storytelling and create the visual experience for the viewer. This one-day workshop is designed for independent filmmakers interested in learning how the collaborative process of costumes and costuming can help make their visions come alive. Participants will learn aspects ranging from costume conception, script breakdown, budgeting and wardrobe to continuity and on set protocols. You'll gain a basic understanding of how the costume designer work in dialogue with props, art direction, the director, the set dresser, actors, and lighting. Whether you're thinking about entering this field or would like a better understanding, this workshop will teach you to successfully use costume design to enhance a film's appearance, effect and feel. Though it’s not mandatory, participants are strongly encouraged to provide the instructor with a brief synopsis prior to Friday, August 27th to discuss costume ideas during the workshop.
Instructor:
Tatjana Hutinec is an applied artist who designs, builds and paints costumes, props and sets for film and theatre productions. For the past 14 years, she worked on Hollywood productions, TV movies, TV series, short films, music videos, commercials, photo shoots, fashion shows and theatre productions. Tatjana's cultural background as well as her education in visual art and clothing design give her the academic knowledge, the tools of the trade and a multitude of art techniques, which in addition to her creative and open mind, help turn the impossible projects into creative challenges. Tatjana has taught workshops on costume design for film to students as well as costume, prop and set design for children's theatrical productions. http://www.tatjanahutinec.com

more than just a yardage sale
Friday May 28: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday May 29: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Very soon bargain-hunting fibre addicts will descend on the Textile Museum of Canada for the annual More Than Just A Yardage Sale. Created and run by the Museum’s volunteers, the sale is a bonanza for textile aficionados and a major fundraiser for the Museum. Shoppers will have their pick of an eclectic mix that includes yardages, yarns, vintage oddments and a wild variety of patterns, quilt fabrics, notions, crafts and books. All sale proceeds support the Textile Museum’s exhibitions and education programming.
Everything in the sale is generously donated. The More Than Just A Yardage Sale is an opportunity for fibre enthusiasts to sort through their stashes, contribute to a good cause and make room for new finds. Donors and donations have ranged from the individual who brought in a few balls of alpaca yarn left over from a project, to the estate of an interior designer who donated a lifetime’s collection of decorator samples.
Now in its fifteenth year, the More Than Just A Yardage Sale is a “must do” event for thrifty Toronto-area textile enthusiasts. The sale has become a major event, raising tens of thousands of dollars and attracting large crowds. Rain or shine, the sale will be held in temporary tents outside of the Textile Museum on 55 Centre Avenue.

The Gaudet show which opened this year's Canadian Fashion Week was stunning on every level. The clothing was sexy, beautifully made, and the styling was creative and modern. The feature piece of this show was the felted wool coat. It came blazing down the runway in fire-engine red, chalky brown with hint's of pink, and moss green to name a few. Included in the swag bag for the show, were two fabric samples of this wool which upon close inspection was multi-layered incorporating many colours to give the impression of depth.

While Gaudet's signature pieces were coats and they were paired with printed silk hot pants, shiny black leggings, and floating organza dresses in sage and candy floss pink. The models wore towering teased chignons, shimmering gold make-up and sleek black and gold platform shoes to complete the ‘Gaudet’ look. This talented pair of designers, Norman and Gio Gaudet, really raised the bar high for designers this week.

Saturday March 6th, 2010, 10 am - 5 pm
One day while pursuing her collection of single buttons, CAFTCAD Member Joanna Syrokomla wondered what to do with all those sparkling beauties. Of what use could they be? She grouped them together by colour and felt they spoke such a history of garment design and a nostalgia left from the fastening of cocktail dresses, brocade coats, military jackets, and other finery. Buttons in a jar were such a beautiful stripe needing to be dusted off and seen. She started sewing them into layers onto bracelets and found quite an audience with many coming back again and again for the latest JO.SY Collection vintage button cuff.

Available usually only by request or at the Bi-Annual CAFTCAD Movie Wardrobe Sales, these button cuffs and now chunky bib button necklaces will be for sale by Member Ian Drummond at the Toronto Vintage Clothing and Textile Show. The Ian Drummond Collection will be selling many incredible vintage and designer garments and accessories from the 1940’s through 1990’s.
Saturday March 6th, 2010, 10 am- 5 pm at the
Conference Ballroom, CNIB Centre
1929 Bayview Avenue, Toronto
Admission $8. Partial proceeds donated to charity.
Vintage Button Cuffs and Necklaces also available by request from
