CAFTCAD presents Creating Worlds with Costumes, a live panel and Q&A with award-winning designers Carlos Rosario (Shōgun, Alien: Romulus), Cynthia Summers (The Last of Us, Snowpiercer), and Kerry Weinrauch (The Winchesters, Supernatural).

Moderated by Joanna Syrokomla (Murdoch Mysteries), this panel explores how costume design shapes characters, stories, and worlds on screen. From historical epics to sci-fi adventures, discover how costume design brings imagination to life.

This panel event will be offered in-person on Saturday, October 25 in North Vancouver, Canada.

Join us in person in Toronto for this sound workshop designed specifically for costume professionals! Led by Constance Hilton, VP of Sound at NABET 700-M UNIFOR, this session will provide costume designers the foundational knowledge they need to collaborate effectively with sound departments on set.

Through a combination of lecture and live demonstrations on a variety of outfits, Constance will walk participants through the key principles of sound wiring, including what works, what doesn’t, and what to keep in mind when selecting fabrics, designing costumes, and dressing cast members. This is a great opportunity for students to learn the basics before going on set, and for costume professionals to understand the partnership between the costume and sound department. This course is generously supposed by NABET 700-M UNIFOR.

Part of CAFTCAD’s Working with External Contractors series, Fitted to the Role explores how costume designers can successfully collaborate with glove makers to bring designs from concept to completion. Led by Katie Sue Nicklos, owner and glove maker of NYC-based Wing+Weft Gloves, this session covers essential communication, measurements, and workflow tips for working with custom glove artisans.

Perfect for students learning the craft or for seasoned costume professionals looking to refine their design outsourcing process, this is a practical guide to the world of glove artisans.

Join us for a live panel and discussion exploring inclusive and mindful practices when working with performers on the gender spectrum. Rooted in sensitivity, collaboration, and care, this event centres on the challenges and opportunities that arise in fitting rooms and spaces within the costume department that are often intimate, gendered, and vulnerable. 

With insights from industry professionals, including performers Makayla Couture and Breton Lalama, and costume designer Benjamin Toner, we’ll be exploring topics such as pronoun usage, gender-affirming fitting practices, and how to navigate and repair missteps with care. This session is designed to equip costume professionals with practical tools and a deeper understanding on how to support performers.

All current CAFTCAD Members are invited to our All Members Meeting on Sunday, June 1 at 1PM ET (10am PT). CAFTCAD hosts an annual All Members Meeting each year to hear from our members, share some CAFTCAD developments, give an overview of our organizational growth, and receive feedback from our member base. This one hour meeting will be hosted virtually via Zoom. 

Join us after the long weekend for an anti-oppression workshop rooted in a space of connection and open communication.

There is no DEI without dialogue. We need to include difference to get to a place of authentic communication with each other, to be able to be passionately surprised by another human being different from oneself. Yet this is easier said than done. As such, this approach to anti-oppression training aims to set up a safe and non-judgemental space that supports dialogue; a space that supports curiosity in oneself and others and promotes connection while identifying and challenging systems, biases and fears that create division.
