September 7, 2024 - xoTO House
CAFTCAD was thrilled to once again join the City of Toronto for their xoTO House celebration for TIFF 2024. As part of the celebrations, CAFTCAD was able to feature work from two of our talented members, Anne Dixon and Ginger Martini. Guests and industry insiders had the opportunity to get a close-up look at Anne Dixon’s intricately designed costumes for David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, which had its North American premiere at TIFF, as well as uniforms from the hit Canadian series Shoresy, brought to life by Ginger Martini.

October 19, 2024 - Movie Wardrobe Sale Toronto
In October, CAFTCAD brought back the beloved Movie Wardrobe Sale. Generously sponsored by Sunbelt Rentals, who provided the studio space, the sale took place in Toronto’s Studio City. With Halloween just around the corner, shoppers eagerly lined up to access a treasure trove of film and TV wardrobe pieces – some for their costumes, others for their daily wardrobe. On sale was also a selection of fabrics for costumers. For those based in Toronto, Leo’s Textiles is a one-stop-shop to make your creations come to life.
Overall, the sale was a massive success, thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers and members.

November 3, 2024 - Inside Out: Exploring the Art of Fashion Construction and Cutting
CAFTCAD was proud to once again collaborate with the SMOC (Society of the Museum of Original Costume) in Vancouver for Inside Out. Following the success of the previously sold-out event Swinging Through the Sixties, this year’s event explored the structure and silhouette of historical garments. It featured pieces on display as well as speakers Ivan Sayers and Mitchell Mackay sharing their insights. Guests were also invited to browse a silent auction, which included a curated collection of clothing and crafts, and even included a costume-themed sculpture cake! Pieces were also generously provided by our members, including stunning jewellery from Par Ici, original drawings by Terry Pitts, a handcrafted necktie set from The Knottier by Clarke Stanley, custom clothing from Plastik Wrap donated by Adriana Fulop, and items from our business members, Peggy Li and Le Grand Costumier.

This year’s holiday party was hosted at the Tiger of Sweden store in Toronto’s west end, which was generously orchestrated by CAFTCAD business member Jun Her of Slavin Raphael. Dozens of CAFTCAD members showed up – in style of course – which made the evening even more wonderful. With small bites and great conversations against a beautiful display of clothing, this was a holiday party to remember.

Also taking place in November was the Crafting Careers: Artist Representation for Costume Professionals course, which was held online. We were joined by Vanguarde Artist Management’s Tina Horwitz and Bianca Rusu, who shared information tailored to artist management for costume designers. Tina and Bianca touched on the role of artist agents and how this joint partnership helps amplify talent through advocacy in the industry.

March 1, 2025 - Nominee Soiree
On the eve of the CAFTCAD Awards, members and nominees were invited to attend a special soiree at Album Studios in the Junction in Toronto. Generously supported by the Ian Drummond Collection, the evening opened with a panel on leadership. Moderated by Joanna Syrokomla, it featured an intimate conversation with Costume Designers Luis Sequeira and Carlos Rosario speaking on the importance of leading with respect within the costume department followed by a lively Q&A. The night ended with buzzing celebrations as designers, makers, nominees and friends from coast to coast reconnected while music played and delicious small bites were handed out – there was even a bespoke drink menu designed for costumers. This was just the beginning of a weekend of celebrations!

With a sit-down dinner in place, the theatre was lined with poster boards of costume illustrations, images detailing the acclaimed work by Industry Icon Award winners Joan Lovett and Anthea Mallinson, and mannequins featuring nominated designs. With dance breaks and hilariously written ballads, the evening celebrated the very best in costume design.
